REC101 - Syllabus
Jul. 24th, 2006 | 06:49 pm
REC101 – An Introduction to Recology (8 weeks, Aug. 3-Sept. 27)
a part of
fan_extension
Course Overview:
This work-shop style course is designed to examine both technique and theory behind creating a fandom recommendation. Participants will discuss what a rec is, study different styles, learn to set-up a rec journal and/or web site, examine rec interaction and discuss issues that may arise during the rec process. The course primarily focuses on fanfiction recs, but will also cover other mediums, such as fanart, music vids and other topics of interest. The course is taught by
beckerbell aka Becky (
tomomichi and Fleeting Fancies) and
aishuu (
rec_a_day).
Course Set Up:
Students must "friend" the journal
recology to "register" for the course. The course starts on Aug. 3, and contains weekly modules exploring different aspects of reccing. The course will remain "open" for late registration until the third module begins. A comment on the syllabus stating intent is also needed to complete the matriculation process.
On Thursdays (see schedule above), the module will be posted in the class journal. Modules range from 3-5 pages, and will conclude with "homework." Homework consists of a few relatively simple questions or exercises, likely to take about five minutes.
Modules are designed explore the topics objectively, and will link to existing recs from a variety of reccers as examples. To avoid possible flame wars, the only "bad" examples will come from the instructors' own failures/mistakes.
The instructors will end each module with points A. (Aishuu) and B. (Becky) to explain their rationalization on methodology for what they use in their own rec comms. Both instructors have very different styles so it's likely to be informativeand cause some hair pulling, because Becky's the stubborn type. ~A
Course requirements:
livejournal
interest in fandom
open mind
courtesy
sense of humor and the absurd
Course expectations:
Students in the course are expected to interact with their classmates and instructors as they experiment with different reccing styles, learn techniques, and gain a fuller appreciation for the complexity reccers may enjoy. Students may ask questions after each module is complete for clarification, but are encourage to wait until the final module before asking outside-of-outline questions.
Students must "turn in" six of the eight assigned exercises. Course completion will be recognized with a "certification in reccing."not that it MEANS anything, but it's still kinda fun. ~ A
